An Important Pineapple Trophy Goblet, The Diamond Sculls 1863
Awarded to Charles Bennett Lawes at Henley Royal Regatta. Silver Gilt with heavily embossed decoration. Made by Edward Ker Reid and Hallmarked London 1862.
First awarded in 1844, the Diamond Sculls "For Amateurs, open to All England" was seen as the pinnacle of individual rowing. In 1850, the Diamond scarf pin prize was replaced by the Diamond Challenge Sculls, the winner being awarded a silver gilt pineapple goblet to retain. This tradition was continued at every regatta until 1973. Charles Bennett Lawes, rowing for 3rd Trinity, Cambridge, beat E.D.Brickwood of London Rowing Club, the verdict "easily" in a time of 9min.43sec. Lawes was something of a Victorian renaissance man, not only gaining rowing and sculling prizes at Eton, but excelling on the athletics field as well. He continued his success at 3rd Trinty, winning the Colquhoun sculls in 1862 and Head of the River in 1863 & 1865. He rowed at Henley in the Grand, won the Diamonds in 1863 and the Ladies in 1865, the same year he also won the Wingfield Sculls. A track Blue, he won the half-mile, the mile, and the two miles and was, in 1865 the AAA mile National Champion. Devoting himself to sculpture after Cambridge, he still found time to take up speed cycling, winning the 25 mile amateur record in 1899 at the age of 56. In 1883, partly because of notoriety gained as a result of a famous libel case, he was featured in a Vanity Fair characature by Verheyden "Athlete and Sculptor". He died in 1911 following an attack of appendicitis.
